Carole Frank Comeau  ---- Bio --- sort of

                                            1960’s

  • Started the decade beginning HS with the STS class of ’60; stayed home a year for surgeries to repair various orthopaedic issues, so I probably know as many from the class of ’60 as ‘59.
  • Went to Academy of St. Joseph, Brentwood on scholarship; way too isolated for me; came back to civilization and graduated from St. Michael’s in 1964.
  • Went to Thomas More College at Fordham—first class of women in formerly all male school—hog heaven!  Graduated ’68.
  • 1968 married Jim Comeau, from Notre Dame and the Midwest, of all places.
  • Moved to Berkeley, CA –Jim got his MS in Engineering—we dabbled in being hippies, participated in protests, tried a few recreational substances, survived.
  • Moved back to civilization again, this time to New Jersey where Jim went to work for Bell Labs; they had paid for his MS.  I started in HR at Allied Chemical.
  •
                                         1970’s

Started grad school at Rutgers; really liked my job better than school – quit after one year.
  • My dad, Joe Frank, the one who used to make the scrambled eggs on Christmas Eve after Midnight Mass, died of colon cancer.
  • Changed jobs to Chubb & Son and got into expatriate compensation working with people in places I knew nothing about, like Iran.
  • 1974 Jim got transferred to Boulder, Colorado and I dutifully went along.  Beautiful place with not much to do unless you are a skier. I hated it!
  • I went to work in Boulder for GTE—2 years later they offered me a transfer to California---yea, no more snow!  I jumped on it and Jim decided to come too—he got a position right away with Hughes Aircraft.
  • Heavy travel with GTE for 2 years—too much---went to a headhunting firm to find something else and they hired me.  Best thing that ever happened, careerwise.
  • 1979; after almost 11 years of marriage, finally decided to have a baby:  Jessica Claire was born in June.

                                       1980’s
  • Mae Frank, my mom, sickly all her life but iron-willed and tough as nails, died of heart failure.
  • A lot of this decade was a big blur—it seemed like all we did was work and raise kids.  We did go on a long trip to Asia in ’82.  A cousin was there, so we took advantage of having a base and visited Hong Kong, Japan, China and Thailand.
  • Started back for an MBA in 1982.  It was a struggle, working, having a child and going to school.  Got pregnant again—bye, bye school.
  • Eva Catherine was born in February 1984.
  • Never stopped working more than six weeks with each child; I loved headhunting and was good at it.  Could call my own shots in the small firm and be available when the kids needed me; it was a perfect setup.
  • 1987:  moved a short distance to our dream house in Fullerton and vowed never to move again.  Had moved 10 times in not quite 20 years.

                                       1990’s
  • The early part of this decade is kind of blurry too.  Very active with the kids in the Fullerton community:  dance, drama, sports, philanthropy.
  • 1993:  my only sibling, Donnie, STS’62, died of colon cancer at 44.  Had made some bad choices along the way—spent most of his adult years high and didn’t even know he was sick until it was too late.
  • 1995:  Jim was transferred to San Diego.  I stayed in Fullerton for two years until Jessica finished high school and he commuted on weekends—lived in an RV in the company parking lot during that time.
  • 1997:  Jessica went off to college and Eva and I left Fullerton, kicking and screaming, to our new home in San Diego.  Eva was 13.
  • 1998:  the move made it clear that I should hang out my own shingle in the headhunting business; I did and it was a great move.

                                    2000’s
  • 2002:  Eva off to college and Jessica moved back home!
  • 2005:  Jessica moved out –this time for good, and Eva stopped coming home for the summer; empty nest at last after 37 years of marriage!
  • 2006:  Jim retired and is loving it; I’m still working and can’t imagine not!
  • 2009:  Jessica married James Mayer; his family is in Colorado.
  • 2010: Kyla Jane Mayer was born on June 13th, 2010.  We have enjoyed the first two months with her but they just moved to Arizona—he got transferred and is going back to school at ASU.  It’s only a five hour drive so we expect to see them every few months.  Not too far and not too close!

  Ann M. Callaghan (nee Grenham)
 1960 ‘s :
1960 Attended St. Vincent Ferrer High School. Developed my love of science participated in science fairs, won a few. My sister Kathy joined me at SVF starting in 1960. Got my first job at the Woolworth’s 5&10 on 5th Avenue and 39th Street in Manhattan. It was to be for the Christmas season, but luckily it lasted until I graduated from High School. I went on to attend Bellevue School of Nursing. I had received a Regents Scholarship that gave some extra money for school. After graduating I started working at Elmhurst General Hospital. My dad died of Colon Cancer 6 weeks after I graduated. I met my future husband, Frank, at Kathleen MaGurren’s sister’s wedding. We married in 1968 and had a daughter, Annmarie, in 1969.

1970 I continued working at Elmhurst through the 70’s. I had a son, Jeffrey, in 1972. My daughter had to have heart surgery in 1975. Since my husband comes from Ireland, and is the youngest of 11, we did not lack from visitors coming over. We in turn took the children over in 1978. We went to Limerick first, where Frank comes from, then up to the farm my dad grew up on in Roscommon.

1980 I was still working at Elmhurst and Frank was at the phone company. Then in 1984 my sister was murdered in her home by two brothers who lived in the next house. That changed all our lives still to this day. I did learn how wonderful neighbors can be. They supported all of us through these rough times. Life went on, Annmarie went to Monsignor Scanlon High School and Jeffrey to Holy Cross. I started going to St. Joseph’s College and received my Bachelors’ degree. I also left Elmhurst, as the area I was working in became too emotional when some of the patients were also robbing and injuring people in order to get money for drugs. I started working at Ozanam Hall Nursing Home in order to be closer to home. My children were afraid something would happen to me also.

1990 After 5years at Ozanam, I became the Director of Nursing. I also went to Hofstra University and obtained my Master’s degree and then my Nursing Home Administrators license. Jeffrey joined the Navy and went to the Persian Gulf on his first deployment. Annmarie started working at Ozanam in various capacities. Frank had a Quadruple Bypass then Carotid Artery Surgery. He became a paralegal then decided he didn’t want to be married anymore When Jeffry finished with active duty he joined the police force. Annmarie married then had a son Dylan in 1998. Her husband is also a police officer.

2000 Jeff married a police officer and he became a Fireman. His class graduated 5 weeks before 9/11. There were many losses all around. Dawson was born to Annmarie and Mike in 2002. Then Jeff and his wife, Peggy, had two sons, Ryan (born in 2004) and Matthew (born in 2006). Annmarie and family moved upstate to Unionville, a little village near Port Jervis, while Jeff and family moved out to King’s Park. Jeff is still with the Navy, he is a Senior Chief Petty Officer and does some teaching on and off at the Merchant Marine Academy. Peggy is now a Sergeant with the NYPD. Mike was injured on the job and is out on disability, Annmarie works in a hospital in Warwick. My Mom went to Heaven in 2003 at the age of 98. Her faith was so strong in God that through the bad times she knew that God would help her get through and He did. After a while, it helped me also. I became a Third Order Carmelite at the chapter started at Ozanam. I then became it’s Director last year. I am also involved in St. Kevin’s, my parish, as a lector and Eucharistic Minister and in the Senior Out-Reach program. I have had a couple of health issues (a Colon Resection in ‘06 and major fall while taking down Chrsitmas decorations in 2007 that necessitated lots of hardware and no walking for 4 months) but happily, am still working and probably will be for a while longer.
